This painting is one of the famous painting of Pablo Picasso, called Guemica. It was created on the 26th of April 1937, during the Spanish Civil War. The “Guemica” painting is black, blue and white. Picasso uses these colours to set a somber mood and to express chaos and pain. Picasso’s purpose of the painting was to bring to the world’s attention of the Basque town of Guemica by German bombers during the Spanish Civil War.

In this painting we can understand that people and animals are suffering. This scene was captured in a room. It is an open painting because at the left end there is an eye standing over a woman that holds a dead child in her arms. There is a panic bull next to the eye where behind it there is a bird. The bird symbolises peace. The centre of the painting is engaged by a painfull horse falling. Under the horse there is a dead soldier, where we see a sword that he holds in his hand. In his open palm we see a stigma.

To the upper right of the horse, we see a frightened female figure. We see a hand next to the female figure that holds a light bulb, which is located near to the lamp. The lamp and the light bulb are positioned next to each other, and this symbolises hope.

Pablo Picasso uses several techniques that symbolises hope, and that the Spanish Civil War is coming to an end. The dark wall with the open door at the right, defines that the war is coming to its end.
