The title of this painting is called “Madame Monet and her son”. This image is an image of Claude Monet’s wife, Camille and his son, Jean. The painting is a close image where there is strong use of light, blurry colours and shadows. When we first look at this picture, our eyes are drawn directly to the woman and this is because she is in the centre and the largest figure in the painting. Not only this, but also there, is the most consentration of the painting. Her body is the focusing part of the painting, although her face is dark. Because her mid-body is brightest than her face, the boy, her son, that is next to her is more noticeable.
There is a great diffrence of the light in this painting because it changes from one section to the next. The light is brightest in the centre of the picture and then it gets darker at the end. The dark umbrella is a great contrast with the light.
The impression that we get from the painting is that the light is coming from the sun, that is located behind the woman. There are no solid lines. The colours are seem to run into one another. The running colours gives the painting the unclear look. The painting captures the idea of a moment. The position of the woman’s dress suggests that wind is present. It is very easy to see that the ground and flowers are close to the viewers eye, followed by the woman, then the boy and then the sky which is the backgound of the painting.
The painting uses all the techniques. The use of light and shadow, the fading colours that gives off the shadowy effect and the capturing of a specific moment in time.
